What's it Like?

Alaska snowmobile guides specialize in introducing newcomers to the sport and love to host out-of-state visitors. Trips range from a few hours on local trails to all-day rides to multi-day excursions where you'll ride to local remote lodges to stay the night.

The tour companies listed below provide full winter gear that includes boots, clothing and helmets, ensuring that you will be warm and comfortable while underway. The snowmobiles are usually luxury models with heated handlebars and secure seats, both powerful and reliable. You will be fully checked out before you embark. It’s fun—and family friendly! Depending on the company kids ages 6-7+ can ride as a passenger.

And it’s also authentically Alaskan. Snowmachines serve as essential tools for transportation in hundreds of off-road communities all winter, used by everyone from school children to subsistence hunters. Riders from Anchorage, Fairbanks and parts between spend weekends riding for fun across mountain ranges, up river valleys and across sweeping tundra. It’s probably the state’s most popular winter recreation.

Where can you go Snowmobiling in Alaska?

Touring by “snowmachine” (what Alaskans call snowmobiles!) is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience the Last Frontier during winter. After freeze-up and snowfall, a trail network gets packed, tracing hundreds of miles of routes that are often groomed. Remote locations and rugged terrain can actually become more accessible during winter. No other mode combines the speed and efficiency of traveling by vehicle with the up-close intimacy of spending time deep in the snowy wilderness.

The best part? These networks of trails can be easily accessed from some of Alaska's biggest cities. Find tours near Anchorage in Girdwood or the Mat-Su Valley, as well as Talkeetna and Fairbanks.

When is the Best Time to Go?

It all depends on the snow! But generally snowmobile tours are available in Alaska from mid-November through late March or early April.
