With almost 30 years under its belt, the Ketchikan Wearable Arts Show is an event you don’t want to miss. Described as the “original runway performance,” this show has inspired imitations in neighboring communities and around the world. If you’d like to see a show that most clearly represents pure artistic talent, this is it. The performance features art from all ages and incorporates beautiful, wearable creations. It also includes a runway show, complete with artist-selected music and models strutting their way past cheering Ketchikan crowds. It’s alluring, sensual, dazzling, and flashy. Just grab a beverage from the bar or a plate of locally made appetizers, then sit back and enjoy the show.
This event’s Friday and Saturday shows are always sold out in advance. Tickets go on sale at the Winter Arts Faire, but even if you come early and stand in line, the coveted Saturday night tickets are hard to come by. That’s because it’s the show’s last performance, followed by an after party with appetizers, beverages, dancing, and a Bizarre Bra Contest. If you happen to be able to get one of these tickets, do it.
Even if you just go to the regular show, it’s quite a spectacle—and a chance to meet some of the Ketchikan community. Locals participate as artists, models, or members of the crowd; they also volunteer as make-up artists, ticket-takers, or bartenders.
