Opened in 2016, Waffles and WhatNot started serving from a picnic table before moving on to become a food cart, a food truck, and now a standalone restaurant. And this Alaskan treasure has quickly become a national institution, featured by Guy Fieri on the Food Network and in publications like Entrepreneur magazine and USA Today. Numerous awards have followed: The restaurant has been named the Best Breakfast in Alaska and was a two-time winner of the Best Food Truck in Alaska, among other recognitions.

Flaky, one-of-a-kind waffles take center stage. Order them savory, with hand-cut, breaded chicken strips and maybe some bacon and mac and cheese. Owner Derrick runs Waffles and WhatNot with his wife and daughter, and almost all of the food is created from scratch—one reason the restaurant claims to have the healthiest fast food in America. Even the interior is unique: Designed to resemble a park, complete with picnic tables, it’s the perfect place to meet locals and chat with other travelers.
