The bald eagle population on Unalaska has fluctuated over the years, and has sometimes been as high as 700. Here, these birds of prey are as plentiful as pigeons are in other cities, giving visitors a rare opportunity to observe our national symbol up close.
While you will likely spot bald eagles throughout town, one sure place to find them is the City Landfill, where they gather to feed opportunistically. To get there, take Summer Bay Road 2.2 miles out of town. As you drive, you may also see eagles in the roadway or on roofs of buildings.
