When you live on an island, being in and around water is second nature. The rough, cold waters surrounding Unalaska are inhospitable to swimmers, though, so the Aquatic Center is their community mecca.
In this small, far-flung spot on the Aleutian chain you might not expect to find a natatorium where you can rocket down a water slide, swim 25-yard laps in the 6-lane heated pool or finish up in the sauna. But here it is.
Also in the Unalaska Aquatic Center: a fitness center with cardio equipment, a mezzanine that overlooks the pool area, and changing rooms for men and women.
Since opening in 2005, this modern facility has become a hub of swimming activity – for community events such as the Pumpkin Plunge, swim meets, private rentals, master swimmers, beginners, and for visitors looking for a bit of relaxation in the warming pool or sauna.
The entry fees are reasonable – and if you are under 4 or over 54, there is no charge.
