Locals know this Homer institution as the place that has everything—from sporting goods to oil for your car, art supplies to prescription medications.
By city ordinance, the town of Homer does not have any “big-box” stores, so this rambling store that comprises the old Lakeside Mall easily counts as one of the biggest in town. And while it does seem to have a staggering amount of variety, it also maintains a charming mom-and-pop vibe.
From Prescriptions and Fishing Licenses to Quilting Supplies
No doubt, if you need any supplies while on your trip to the Homer area, there is a good chance you’ll find them here. For starters, they carry a wide variety of rain gear, boots, layered clothing options, hats, and sunglasses. If you plan to go fishing, you can pick up last minute bait and lures or get fully outfitted with top of the line poles, reels, and tackle. If you plan on camping in the area you will find all the necessities like sleeping bags, tents lighter fluid, and often the most important item, mosquito repellent. There are a few food options—such as chips, canned drinks, jerky, and packaged snacks. For the artfully inclined, a large selection of crafting supplies, fabric and quilting supplies are available. It’s also a nice spot to get Alaska gifts to take home, from postcards to made-in-Homer crafts by local artists.
The store’s history stretches back to 1954—and Anchorage, when Ulmer’s opened as a family-owned Rexall Drug store in downtown Anchorage. It survived the massive 1964 earthquake and in 1977, an additional location was opened in Homer as a combination hardware and drugstore.
Shopping with a Smile
Walk in and you’ll immediately feel like a regular—thanks to the friendly, old time customer service provided by the Ulmer’s staff. They are more than happy to walk you around the expansive store to ensure you have a positive shopping experience. The more than 40 employees hail from a number of nearby communities; Anchor Point, Ninilchik, and of course, Homer. Several have been with the store for over twenty-five years and are uniquely qualified to assist you.
