Tenakee Springs Market opened as Snyder Mercantile in 1899. Over the years it’s been a main resource for residents and travelers. Today it’s considered the best store in Southeast Alaska, carrying a little bit of everything you’ll find in a large grocery, plus top shelf whiskeys, wines and beer from all over the globe. Tenakee Springs Market serves local residents, ferry passengers, fishing boats, touring yachts, and floatplane passengers visiting Tenakee.
It’s been remodeled recently, and now features vertical siding on the outside and yellow cedar planks inside. It’s a beautiful store with a long history. To learn more about the early days of Tenakee and the Snyder Mercantile, head across the street to the new Tenakee Museum, located in the old liquor store. Many of the relics and documents from the original business have been preserved and are now in the care of volunteer museum staff.
