For decades, Scanlon Gallery has been on the short list of fine art galleries in Ketchikan, specializing in the works of contemporary artists throughout the state. Located on Mission Street next Arctic Spirit Gallery, Scanlon showcases a quite a collection of treasures – some of them truly unique (how about a gyotaku fish print or an elk antler sofa table?) – and all of them authentically Alaskan or Northwest Coast art.
Scanlon’s strength is not only the quality of its collection, but the range of styles and mediums. You can find gorgeous but functional hand-carved wooden bowls, glass sculptures of fish, copper etchings, antler and soapstone carvings and pottery. Prints, photographs, and original paintings adorn the walls, representing both well-known (Birdsall, Munoz) and lesser-known artists.
Prices are considered reasonable, and locals recommend Scanlon as a place for good quality authentic souvenirs (the gift shop section offers ornaments, jewelry, books and Alaska-specific souvenirs). Staff are friendly and knowledgeable and don’t mind spending extra time to help you find just the right piece.
Take an hour to browse the store to immerse yourself in fine quality Alaskan art – or do your homework ahead of time and check out part of their collection online. It’s conveniently arranged by both artist and by medium.
