Nestled at the end of Douglas Highway, Savikko Park, often referred to as Sandy Beach, is a local favorite and a hidden gem for visitors.
Why Savikko Park is Special
For starters, there’s a sandy beach—a real rarity in Southeast Alaska! And when the tide goes out, the beach stretches even farther. It’s the perfect spot for a scenic stroll, and locals love bringing their dogs here to run. Be sure to bring your camera—this is one of the best places to snap a photo, whether it’s the mountains, the water, or a bald eagle soaring by.
Things to Do
- Sandy Beach: A wave-free, calm area. On a warm day, you’ll see sunbathers lounging in chairs or stretched out on beach towels. But don’t be fooled—the water is icy! The brave might wade in to cool off, but full-on swimming is rare. As the sun sets, bonfires flicker along the shore, making for a cozy way to soak in the scenery.
- Treadwell Mine Historic Trail: Explore the fascinating remnants of the old Treadwell Mine, offering a glimpse into Juneau’s gold mining past.
- Covered Shelters & Pavilion: Perfect for gatherings, picnics, and events with family and friends. These can be reserved for events.
- Sports Facilities: Featuring two sand volleyball courts and three baseball fields.
- Playground & Restrooms: Great playground with swings, slides and more.
- Treadwell Arena: An indoor arena offering ice-skating and other recreational activities.
- Wildlife Watching: A great spot to look for bald eagles and even the occasional whale offshore.
Best Times to Visit
- Low Tide: The beach stretches further, revealing expansive sandy areas perfect for walking, bonfires, and beachcombing.
- Early Mornings & Evenings: Enjoy the tranquil beauty, changing light conditions, and stunning mountain views.
