The Nome Recreation Center is so packed on the first Saturday in December that you have to listen carefully for your bingo numbers. The annual Fireman’s Carnival is greatly anticipated by community members, many of whom volunteer to help organize and pull off the event, which is a fundraiser for non-profit organizations in Nome.
The Carnival started out more than 100 years ago as a ladies garden party, and evolved into an evening full of bingo, raffles, and food. You know you’re in Nome when the raffle prizes are snowmachines, gold nuggets, airline tickets and heating fuel!
