This Model Canoe by Israel Shotridge was done in the northern Tlingit style. Canoes were much more than a means of transportation along the Northwest Coast. They arrived dramatically at a potlach laden with guests and gifts of food and are themselvees considered a symbol of wealth and prestige, The designs on the prow of this canoe are the eagle and the killer whale. The model was hewn, then steamed open in the traditional way.
