Migration is located at the mid-point of the gracefully curved airport ticket lobby. The sculpture is a focal point which allows visitors to orient themselves in the large space. To achieve this, I placed a large three dimensional glass relief at the head of the escalators and stairs. Migration can be seen from any direction and the surface was sealed to make it smooth to the touch. Migration alludes to the much loved pristine outdoors of Alaska and the annual miracle of salmon migrating. Photos of salmon taken in Katmai National Park were transformed into templates in the 3 D Maya computer program. These templates were then used to cut hundreds of strips of glass (up to 12 " wide) which were laminated vertically into a steel base for earthquake proofing. Alaskan fishermen have said enthusiastically that the forms in the glass relief show exactly the movements that salmon make when they are pulled out of the water.
