The Ayakulik River area is remote Alaska at its best — a fly-in-only area of Western Alaska with abundant wildlife and some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. During this workshop with professional photographers, you’ll capture stunning shots and experience off-the-grid riverfront camping.
You’ll fly by floatplane to this unique region full of towering mountain vistas. Bears are a big draw for photographers up here, and the brown bear subspecies that calls this area home is known for being the biggest bear on the planet. See them fish for spawning salmon and keep an eye out for ptarmigan, caribou, red fox, bald eagles, beavers, river otters, and a variety of waterfowl.
Daily Photography Excursions
Each day, jet boats and rafts will take you to a new area, with every location customized for the interests of the group. Spend time shooting with your pro guide, and expect to spend some time exploring on foot in order to find great shots. You can also opt to go fly fishing for sockeye salmon.
Backcountry Accommodations
You’ll be staying in cozy tents set on wood platforms. Each has a cot, sleeping bag, lantern, and heater. The camp even has a steam bath in an insulated yurt. Enjoy high-quality meals featuring local ingredients. Breakfast may include fruit, cereal, eggs, potatoes, and bacon; lunch might be a sandwich with fresh fruit and snacks; and delicious dinners include local seafood, chicken, steaks, or burgers.
All along, you’ll be upping your photo game, thanks to shooting and editing tips from pro photographers Dan M. Lee, Jessica Haydahl Richardson, or Mick Ryan.
*Note: Kodiak Photo Workshop recommends staying in Kodiak the day before you depart for the lodge, as well as the day after, so you can enjoy Kodiak and avoid any potential weather delays.
