This riverbed trail follows the Knik River towards the Knik River Glacier, with Pioneer Peak looming above. Hike this trail and you’ll understand why Pioneer Peak is called “The Watcher.” Head east towards the Chugach Mountains, meanwhile, and you’ll get a glimpse of the Knik Glacier, glittering 20 miles in the distance. Or, head north into the trees for hundreds of miles of trails in the Knik River Recreation Area. You’ll find flat, gentle hiking with gorgeous views—so go as far as you want. One qualifier for the East access: Getting to this part of the trail requires that you cross a small branch of a stream, so you’ll want to use a 4-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance.
