Framed by green mountains on three sides, Kelty field is the perfect setting for an end-of-summer party – a celebration of Aleutian life and the people who make Unalaska their home (whether year-round or just for the summer).
Coordinated by the city’s Parks, Culture and Recreation Department, the Heart of the Aleutians Festival is a family affair, where artists and their crafts, small businesses and non-profits fill the community tent with vendor booths to display and offer their treasures and services.
Non-stop activities illustrate the vibrant nature of the community. Live music fills the Aleutian air as local groups share their best classic rock, blues, folk, gospel and classical selections. An inflatable playground attracts younger children, while older youth roll around in inflatable “hamster” balls. The tug of war, egg toss, dunk tank and the Heart of the Aleutians 5K race offer fun skills challenges and friendly competition.
Fueling activities throughout the day is a tasty blend of cultural and all-American foods (from barbeque and burgers to Filipino noodles) and plenty of sweets too.
Wander through for a sample, enjoy the music, and sit back with a cup of coffee or chat with local vendors. The Heart of the Aleutians Festival is one of the best ways to meet the interesting and friendly personalities that knit this colorful, international community together.
