The grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis), also known as the silvertip bear, the grizzly, or the North American brown bear, is a subspecies of brown bear (Ursus arctos) that generally lives in the uplands of western North America. The term "grizzly" in its name refers to "grizzled" or grey hairs in its fur. These powerful hunters of the Norther are normally solitary, active animals. However, in coastal areas, the grizzlies put aside their lonely practices for a few weeks each summer to congregate alongside streams, lakes, rivers, and ponds during the salmon spawn.
