Love biking? Love art? Then this ebike excursion around Anchorage from Freewheel Tours is perfect for you.
The 3-hour, 18-mile trip runs in the morning and afternoon and takes an intimate group (there’s a 4-person maximum) past gorgeous murals, to appreciate the art and learn the backstory of each. It’s culture, history, and recreation wrapped up in one tour—and anyone ages 15 and up who can ride a bike is welcome.
Pedal Through Art and History: Anchorage's Unique Ebike Tour
Once you get set up with pedal-assist e-bikes and helmets, you’ll ride for a couple miles, talk about a piece of public art—its history, artist, and significance—before biking on to the next mural. You’ll have a coffee break in the middle of the tour.
The route includes the Campbell Creek trail through the University of Alaska Anchorage campus and the Chester Creek trail. You’ll also spend some time on the coastal trail, so you’ll get a scenic tour along the city’s stunning coastline where you may even see a moose or bear.
Along the way, you’ll take time to appreciate art like the Whaling Wall Mural, 5 stories high and almost 400 feet long, with several life-size whales painted on it. You’ll learn about the artist, Robert Wyland, and how he’s painted “whaling walls” all over the world.
The tour is perfect for travelers as well as locals, since it gives them insight into artwork they may see every day but not know the story behind it.
It’s a truly unique way to experience the culture and history of Anchorage, out in the fresh air and led by a local guide who’s passionate about art and biking.
