Fort Seward Sculpture Garden
In 2017, a local arts group adopted the crumbling basement foundation of a Fort Seward barracks building destroyed by fire in 1981. Today it’s a free, open-air art gallery featuring creations by local artists. Works are intended to provoke thought and reflect fort history, including interactive, kinetic pieces. Check out the giant, rotating hourglass and a “carousel” of marine life fashioned from an old boiler. Fixed into the mosaic’s south side is a tile mosaic of the James Fornance, a steamship that once delivered the town’s mail and freight to the Army dock one block north. Excuse the construction debris. This gallery is a work in progress.
