If you're on your way in or out of Talkeetna, be sure to stop at Flying Squirrel Bakery Cafe, located at Mile 11 on the Talkeetna Spur (just 3 miles from town). The cafe opened in 2009 and quickly became known for their challah and rugelach, as well as vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free choices - don't worry, though, there's something for everyone including meat-eaters. The owners come from the east coast and from a long-time local farming family, and they're pretty creative with fresh local ingredients.
You'll find a great selection of artisan breads made in a wood-fired brick oven, pastries, soups and sandwiches —perfect for a road trip or campground treat. They also cook up wood fired pizza in the evenings on weekends. They're open year round, 7 days from June-September and closed Mondays and Tuesdays during winter.
If you want to linger, grab an organic coffee and take advantage of the free WiFi, peaceful atmosphere, and creative decor with revolving monthly local art displays. And, if you're looking to stretch your legs, you can access the Talkeetna Lakes Park trails right out the back door.
