Black Rapids Glacier (mi 225.4)

Around here, little signs can offer big rewards. Driving south from Delta—a half mile south of the Lodge at Black Rapids—you’ll see a brown sign noting a wildlife-viewing spot 1,500 feet ahead, followed by a pull-out onto the right-hand side.

At the pullout, be sure to check out the plaque that tells the history of wild buffalo in the area. In May and early June, you even have a good chance of seeing the buffalo out with their young.

Directly across the street from the pull-out, on the left-hand side of the road, you’ll see a green trailhead sign marking “Rapids Lake Trail.” That trail leads to a small lake. If you have a boat, you can follow the lake farther back into the surrounding mountains.
