Single level hunter style cabin.

Facilities

Oil stove for heat (#1 diesel only), 4 single bunks, Wooden table and benches, Counter, Pit-type outhouse, Stove has slightly domed top, brown enamel finish, is used for heating purposes only; burns #1 heating oil. Water available from a small stream 1/4 mile (400 m) north of cabin. Treat all water before using.

Rocky Pass, Kupreanof Island

Location

North end of Big John Bay in Rocky Pass, west side of Kupreanof Island.

Access

28 miles (45 km) by float plane from Petersburg, 18 miles (29 km) by boat from Kake, or 16 miles (26 km) by road plus 1.75 miles (2.8 km) hike from Kake.

Terrain

Tidal flat which becomes an islet at high tide. Cabin on small wooded point that faces large expanse of tidal grass and saltwater flats.

Special Features

Bear, grouse, waterfowl hunting. Trout, pink salmon, and coho salmon fishing in Hamilton and Big John creeks. Big John Bay Trail provides roaded access to cabin from community of Kake. Trail difficult to follow. Route follows tide flats (no access at high tide), then parallels a small creek until reaching logging road. Additional hikes in area: Hamilton Bay Trail, Goose Lake Trail and Cathedral Falls Trail.

What To Bring

#1 diesel fuel, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, fire starter and rubber boots. It's a good idea to bring your own water.

No trail access during high tide. 15ft tide required for boat or plane, or 1-mile hike in mud. Cabin marker may be difficult to sight from water.
