Just after the Richardson Monument, you will see a gravel road leading into a wide open valley surrounded by mountains. Every April this spot comes alive with one of skiing’s toughest—and strangest—races, the Arctic Man, which combines skiing with snowmobiling. Watch skiers speed down a narrow canyon for a full 2 miles, then meet up with their snowmobiling partners, who tow the skiers uphill at full throttle before they race downhill again. Are there broken bones in this race? You bet.
