7 Days on the Alaskan Story

You’re sure to have an intimate journey, since only full groups of up to 8 people can book the 7-day, 6-night itineraries. Most itineraries are round-trip Juneau, but you can also travel between Juneau and Sitka, or work with Alaska Yacht Charters to explore an area of interest. Some sailings even spend time in gorgeous Glacier Bay National Park, as the Alaskan Story is one of the few ships permitted to cruise there.

Along the way you’ll get to know Ryan, the First Mate. He’s one of three owners, all of whom were born and raised in Southeast Alaska, and who bought the business from the original owners of the Alaskan Story. In other words, they know the area and are passionate about what they do!

The 90-foot luxurious yacht is filled with cozy spaces decked out in teak, and just 4 staterooms: 2 with a queen-size bed, and 2 with 2 twin beds.

While aboard, you can fish right from the large fishing cockpit for Dungeness crab, Alaskan spotted shrimp, halibut, and salmon. Take out a kayak or standup paddleboard, or go out in the Zodiac or whaler to explore on the water. Head up to the fully enclosed skybridge to take in the views and hang out with the captain. From this perch you can watch for humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, harbor seals, and Dall’s porpoise. You may even spot brown bears, wolves and moose on shore. Or, take in the views from outside on the wrap-around deck or the 6-foot bowsprit.

Inside, guests can relax in one of the spacious common areas inside and watch the scenery go by. There’s also Starlink internet and a TV available for guests to watch movies or review their photos from the day.

Gourmet Meals

In the dining area, you’ll enjoy gourmet meals created by the chef. Chat while they make homemade pasta or filets and cooks the fish you caught that day.

Family-style breakfasts may include eggs and roasted veggies, breakfast burritos, oatmeal, and stuffed French toast, along with juice and coffee. Lunch might be fish tacos, sandwiches, or macaroni. Delicious plated dinners could feature fresh seafood, pasta, or steaks, and a decadent dessert like Crème brûlée. Beer and wine are included, and menus can be customized to the group.

Choose Your Itinerary

You can book up to 2 weeks out if the yacht is available, but if there’s a specific week you want to travel, it’s recommended that you book 12 to 18 months in advance. Your trip begins the day before your yacht charter. Alaska Yacht Charters will pick you up at the Juneau Airport, take you to the store to pick up any necessities and bring you to a local hotel where you’ll stay one night before your charter begins. Here are 2 sample round-trip Juneau itineraries:

Glacier Bay National Park

Alaska Yacht Charters has one of the few exclusive permits for the park, and this round-trip expedition from Juneau is the perfect opportunity to explore it. You’ll get to see spectacular places like John Muir Inlet and the 21-mile-long Margerie Glacier, along with lots of whales, puffins, and otters.

Admiralty Island

Circumnavigate this 100-mile-long island, stopping to go bear-viewing, crabbing, shrimping, and fishing—and visiting a hot spring or two. You’ll see glaciers and icebergs as you sail to the awe-inspiring Tracy Arm, home to North and South Sawyer Glaciers, and see the steep, narrow fjord named Ford’s Terror. The company also has permits to visit a unique group of islands called Brother’s Islands where you can take a guided hike or explore on your own.
