The Experience

Enjoy a week exploring Thorne Bay upon the luxurious Mad Crabber

Enjoy a week exploring Thorne Bay upon the luxurious Mad Crabber

You’ll begin your expedition by flying into Ketchikan and taking a scenic, small-plane flight over to Prince of Wales Island. There, in Thorne Bay, you’ll board the yacht, the Mad Crabber, and meet your hosts and crew, the husband-and-wife duo of Caleb and Chelsea.

This luxurious yacht, which underwent a major retrofit in 2019, includes a queen-size master stateroom and a midship double-bunk stateroom, each with a bathroom and shower. You’ll enjoy full climate control, an onboard water maker, and Starlink high-speed Internet, along with gear including kayaks, crab and shrimp pots, fishing equipment, and more.

You’ll spend the next five days exploring gorgeous areas as you work your way up towards Wrangel and sail around Edoline Island. Because you’ll be sailing through protected flat water areas, not the open ocean, you can expect smooth-safe cruising, aided by the boat’s hydraulic stabilization.

Along the way, you can kayak, set shrimp pots, and enjoy angling in the shimmering waters. You’ll also be able to access beaches, thanks to the 12-foot motor-powered tender. Smell the fresh Alaskan air as you look for marine wildlife life orcas, gray whales, porpoises, and seals. And on land, look for bears, deer, birds, and other native wildlife. Each excursion is customized around what interests you most.

On board, you’ll enjoy delicious meals that may include local cuisines like Alaskan salmon, halibut, spotted prawns, and Dungeness crab.

You can also expect magical experiences, like a stop in Myers Chuck, a quaint little fishing village accessible only by air or by boat. Visit with locals and learn what it’s like to live in such a remote location. You’ll also have the unique opportunity to visit the Anan Bear Preserve, where you’ll see how bears feed on salmon and interact with each other.
