Witch's Hair

Thalluslong, hanging loosely, often twisted and somewhat flattened strands; pale greenish with small, raised white ridges on surface. Occasional brown apothecia. On conifers and hardwoods in all forest types, from sea level to alpine. Important winter food for blacktailed deer. Used in air quality monitoring. Three species of Alectoria occur in this region.
