Unalaska Paintbrush
Better known as Yellow Paintbrush
Castilleja unalaschcensis
Scrophulariaceae/Figwort Family
Yellow Paintbrush grows in coastal and subalpine meadows. Growing 12-18" it has long, pointed somewhat hairy leaves. A cluster of yellow, leaf like bracts (modified leaves) hide the inconspicuous green flowers.
The genus Castilleja is named for Don Domingo Castillejo, a 18th century Spanish botanist. The species unalaschcensis derives from Unalaska in the Aleutians where the plant grows.
