Common Murre

Alaska species birds common murre 3 2339

At a glance the Common Murre looks suspiciously like a penguin with a white underside and black head, back and wings. They winter at sea and in the summer nest on rocky shorelines and cliffs in large colonies. Their eggs have two interesting characteristics; unique coloring that may allow the parents to identify it and a strongly pointed end that allows the egg to roll in a circle if unlodged from the nest rather than rolling off the cliff.
