into Mt. McKinley's backcountry, an
area rich in gold-mining history, wildlife,
and scenic wonders.
Your adventure
begins at Trapper Creek where you meet
your guide, slip into your Jeep Wrangler®,
and then head to the historic Petersville
Mining District. This remote area is
accessible only by off-road vehicles,
located in the shadow of McKinley where
prospectors still mine gold from rugged
claims. With your guide in the lead,
motor along roads and trails that range
from smooth to extreme with plenty
of bumps, dips, and obstacles. Your
Jeep Wrangler® carries four guests
and there's ample opportunity to switch
drivers; everyone can enjoy the thrill
of maneuvering along dirt roads carved
out of the wilderness by the area's
first prospectors.
Interactive two-way radios allow
your guide to explain the history of
the area, the life of the prospectors
who still work these claims, and gold
mining practices of yesterday and today—plus
pass on tips about the road conditions
ahead. Throughout the trip, you'll
be able to ask the guide questions
and share the experience with your
fellow passengers.
Your destination is ATA's rustic
mining camp in the Cache Creek gold
fields. Your guide will show you how
to pan for gold in the pristine creek;
try your luck and keep any gold you
find! At this picturesque site you'll
also enjoy a delicious lunch that features
a choice of hearty beef stew or pasta
salad plus sourdough rolls with butter
and wild berry jam, apple pie, and
a choice of beverages.
