It’s been quite a journey for this little hostel, located near downtown and the library. The main house was once a cabin, but in true Alaska style, it’s been added on to, and owners Gary and Janilyn Heger have continued this tradition. Today, there’s a bunkhouse right next to the main house with gender-specific bunkrooms, as well as one private room in the Heger’s home (where the shared kitchen is located). Alcohol and smoking (outside only) are allowed, and there’s no curfew or lockout. The hostel provides free internet access on the spacious common-use porch, as well as free shuttle service to the ferry.

Dorms, $20 per person. Private room, $50. Linens and towel included. 8% city bed tax not included in price.

Chilkoot Trail Outpost

Fred and Kathy Hosford made their dream of returning to the place of Fred’s childhood come true, with this inn, featuring a main lodge and eight log cabins laden with amenities. And today they cook breakfast in the lodge each morning for their guests. You’ll also find an outdoor gazebo with cooking facilities, bicycles, satellite TV, and hot showers and flush toilets, which you’ll truly appreciate if you hike the Chilkoot Trail (the trailhead is just a half-mile down the road). And the Taiya River is just across the street—look for eagles waiting for fish.

From here you can strike out on foot to Dyea, a defunct Gold Rush-era site where the National Park Service conducts daily tours. Or just wander down the road to West Creek and take a hike up the trail to see the West Creek Glacier. Watch for bears, though—grizzlies are known to hang out around here.

Cabin Suites have a queen bed or twin beds and a futon that becomes a double bed, $175. The Deluxe Cabin features two queen beds, $175. These all come with microwave, refrigerator, and coffeemaker. Hiker’s Suites have one single bed and a futon that becomes a double bed, $145. Additional charge of $25/person for any room with more than 2 people. 8% city bed tax not included in price.
