"Try at least one of the cruise ships that go out on the bay. If you don't have that much time, go to Exit Glacier-or walk around downtown, on the bike path, or the beach. "
Who he is: Seward resident since August 1964. Director and President of the Seward Museum, President of the Resurrection Bay Historical Society.
Don't miss: Take a cruise into the bay
Why did you come to Alaska?
I was born and raised in Iowa. I read of a vacancy for a teaching position in Seward, so I applied, got it, and moved on up.
What is there about living in Seward that's unlike any other place in Alaska?
Well, I've never lived any other place, but I've always been happy here. It's small enough that it's not too crowded, not lots of traffic. But if you need to, you can still get up to Anchorage and any other big city.
What's your favorite book on Alaska?
Usually the last one I read is my favorite. I just finished one on Russians in America by Dr .Black. I also read a biography on Governor Egan.
What's your favorite season?
The long days of summer are always nice-you can get out and do lots of outdoor activities, but it's also nice in winter to curl up and hibernate.
What should I see in Seward?
Depends on what's going on, but in general, walking along the beach is always enjoyable, seeing what's going on around the boat harbor. Go to the museum and the senior citizen center, where you can get a taste of the history and talk with some locals.
What's your favorite local hidden treasure?
When people ask for something to do, I say the first lake trail-just a fun trail. Lots of flowers, trees, and views; a very enjoyable little hike.
Where's your favorite place to have breakfast in Seward? Dinner?
The Breeze Inn and the Seward Windsong Lodge.
What's one experience or attraction you think visitors should not miss in Seward?
Depends on how long they are going to be here. They should try at least one of the cruise ships that go out on the bay. If they don't have that much time, I would say Exit Glacier-or walk around downtown, on the bike path, or the beach.
What are top myths that tourists/outsiders have about Alaska?
It doesn't really rain all the time.
What's one thing about Alaska you think visitors may not know that you would like to share with them?
For the most part we are not all that different. They always think we live in cabins out in the middle of nowhere. We do the same things, go to work and make a living. Normal stuff.
