Fox Island is a peaceful, remote island in the middle of Resurrection Bay, just outside of Kenai Fjords National Park. People who come here, perhaps on a glacier cruise, explore the beaches or take a sea kayak out for a paddle. But the way to really soak up this lovely little island is to stay at the Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge.
This is a true escape from civilization: You can only get here by boat from Seward, and the eight cabins, which can hold up to 22 people, offer a low-key experience. Cabins are named after marine animals, and each has a quilt of its namesake animal hanging on the wall. Expect a remote Alaskan experience--—there are no telephones or TVs—but you will find a bed, private bath, table and chairs, propane heating, and electric lights. Everything here is wind- and solar-powered, too. The staff is attentive, yet not intrusive. You have your own private chef on the island, preparing Alaska cuisine for your enjoyment.
Indeed, the focus here is on nature. Go on a walking beach tour with the lodge’s naturalist and admire the unique flat rocks, which make a unique ringing sound when you walk on them, and a twinkling sound when the tide washes up on them. Make a campfire in the evening overlooking the bay or pick berries, when in season. Be careful not to stay up too late, since it doesn’t get dark until after midnight. In the morning head for the water. Kayakers will be in heaven out here; paddle out and explore the many coves that line the island. And keep an eye out for humpback whales, as well as the orca whales that swim up to shore and scratch their bellies on the rocks.
