Northern Alaska Tour Company offers a diverse selection of tours designed to get you under the northern lights. Tours start in Fairbanks and include trips north to Coldfoot, a remote town perfectly situated under the "auroral oval," where you will find the best displays of northern lights. Northern lights trips run from late August to late April when the skies are dark and auroral activity is common. Plan on spending a few days in Fairbanks to catch the best displays.
In the fall, NATC offers a unique opportunity to combine northern flight seeing with a driving tour and northern lights viewing. Their Aurora Fly-Drive package has it all; including some of the best guides in Fairbanks- they are passionate about Alaska, and excited to share their knowledge with you. Your flight to Coldfoot, located in the Brooks Mountain Range, will give you an aerial view of the vast northern wilderness. From Coldfoot you’ll drive south in the comfort of one of NATC’s tour vehicles and learn the story of Alaska’s arctic as you travel along the rugged Dalton Highway. You’ll view the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and cross the Arctic Circle in ceremonious fashion. When the skies get dark, you’ll stop along the way to watch for northern lights. This tour is designed to take advantage of the evenings dark skies and give you the best northern lights viewing opportunities. Trips run from August 21 to September 18.
If you’re planning a trip later in the winter or spring, NATC has a variety of tours to fit your needs. Their Arctic Circle Aurora Adventure departs Fairbanks by land or air and includes optional excursions out of Coldfoot, which will serve as your basecamp during your adventure. Accommodations are simple and clean in this remote outpost, and the extra time in Coldfoot means more time to view the best northern lights and explore the unique features of the north. Optional tours include dog sledding with a local musher and an excursion north to the Brooks Mountain Range’s Attigun Pass. An evening tour to historic Wiseman is a great way to watch for northern lights- stop into a unique cabin for a warm-up and hot cocoa. Tour packages run 3 days/ 2 nights or 4 days/ 3 nights and include a flight one-way combined with their informative ground tour on the other end of your trip.
If you have one day to explore the north and see the northern lights, the Arctic Circle Aurora Drive Adventure is your best bet.
