Step into the elegant, Art Deco public areas of the Westmark Baranof and it will quickly become apparent that there’s a strong historic pedigree here. In fact, Juneau’s grand dame hotel dates to 1939 and served for decades as an informal branch of the state capitol. Today, the rooms are fully modern, but key historic elements like pressed-tin ceilings and glass doorknobs give it a flavor of yesteryear. Still the hotel is hardly trapped in history: they have applied environmentally friendly was of heating by ingeniously mixing vegetable oil with fuel oil.
The Baranof also boasts a great location, downtown and within walking distance of the capitol, cruise ship docks, shops, and state offices. Reserve a room on one of the upper floors (on the water side) to take advantage of the great view. And don’t miss traditional fine-dining in the dark wood-paneled Gold Room (one of the best restaurants in Juneau), or a drink in the Bubble Lounge.
