If you’re looking for a grand old hotel, this is your place. Dating to 1939, the Baranof has maintained the opulence of that era. The dark, lavish lobby is a favorite gathering place for legislators, and you’ll find glass doorknobs and pressed-tin ceilings. Remodeling has helped bring more light in, but many of the 196 rooms are on the small side. Still, the downtown location can’t be beat and many Alaskans who travel for business choose to stay here.

A consistent, upscale waterfront hotel at a good value: that’s what the Prospector’s all about. Remodeled in 2001, its cherry-wood furniture and new artwork make the 63 large units cozy and fashionable. The downtown location is great, and rooms facing Gastineau Channel have good views though you may well have to deal with highway noise. If you happen to have a car, the hotel offers free parking.
