Scenery and wildlife is plentiful as you enjoy a leisurely drive up the Parks Highway to Denali. Keep an eye out for moose, caribou, bear and other critters during the drive. You may also see the peak of Alaska’s most famous mountain, Mt. McKinley, along the way (weather permitting).

Highlights
Anchorage, Willow (Dog-sled Racing), Talkeetna (Denali National Park), Talkeetna (Kantishna Wilderness Trails, Mt. McKinley), Fairbanks (University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum), Wasilla (Iditarod Race Headquarters), Palmer (Musk Ox Farm), Hatcher Pass (Independence Mine)

Day 1 • Anchorage
You will be met at the airport in Anchorage by a representative from Explore Tours who will provide you with your travel documents and answer any questions you may have.  Transfer to your Bed & Breakfast on your own.  Pick up your rental car and overnight in Anchorage.
Anchorage/Talkeetna Day 2 • Anchorage/Denali

Journey along the Glenn and Parks Highway to Denali National Park (approximately 6 hours, 237 miles, 381 km). We recommend a stop at Byers Lake in Denali State Park en route.  A wonderful hike around the Lake offers spectacular views of Denali.  Upon arrival in Denali National Park stop at the Denali Park Visitor Center for information, maps and brochures about the Park and its surroundings. Overnight near the Park entrance.

Talkeetna/Denali

Day 3 • Denali
This morning depart on the fully narrated Kantishna bus tour through Denali National Park. Enjoy breathtaking scenery and, in clear weather, view Mt. McKinley. Search for moose, bear, wolves, caribou, Dall sheep, and more. A box lunch and beverage is included. Overnight near the Park entrance.

Denali

Day 4 • Denali/Fairbanks
Spend some time sightseeing in Denali before you head to Fairbanks (approximately 2 ½ hours, 125 miles, 201 km). In Fairbanks, explore downtown and/or enjoy an optional visit to the University of Alaska Museum of the North. The Museum features Alaska Native cultural, historical and contemporary art. See Blue Babe, the world’s only restored Ice Age bison mummy, fist-sized gold nuggets, Alaskan dinosaur bones and much more. Overnight in Fairbanks.

Denali/Fairbanks

Day 5 • Fairbanks/Talkeetna
Return to the Parks Highway and head south to Talkeetna, the closest community to Mt. McKinley (approximately 5 hours, 278 miles, 447 km). You may opt to take a Mt. McKinley flightseeing tour this evening or simply relax and enjoy this quaint town.  Overnight in Talkeetna.

Fairbanks/Wasilla

Day 6 • Talkeetna/Hatcher Pass
Today travel to Palmer and up to Hatcher Pass and the Independence Mine. This scenic area is an outdoor playground for locals year-round and a perfect setting for a hike, or to simply learn more about the history of the mine.  Overnight in Hatcher Pass.

Wasilla/Anchorage

Day 7 • Hatcher Pass/Anchorage
Return to Anchorage this morning and enjoy the afternoon at your leisure (approximately 1 1/2 hours, 58 miles, 93 km). Take a stroll along the scenic Tony Knowles’ Coastal Trail and consider an optional visit to the Alaska Native Heritage Center. The Center offers you an experience in Native cultures and traditions without leaving Anchorage. Overnight in Anchorage.

Anchorage

Day 8 • Anchorage
Rental car return and Anchorage departure. End of tour.
