Besides ranking as one of Alaska's prime sea kayaking destinations, the east side of Kachemak Bay is also one of its most accessible. You won't need to invest in a floatplane or boat charter to reach the wildlife, sheltered waters, or secluded areas across the bay.

Take a short water-taxi ride (25-30 minutes) from Homer with True North Kayak Adventures to their base on the phenomenal Yukon Island. Famed for its abundant marine wildlife and spectacular scenery, this kayaking hotspot boasts a high population of nesting eagles and sea otters. Sea kayakers paddle by dramatic cliffs, weaving through rock arches and rock gardens.

True North's most popular day trip offers a cornucopia of wildlife viewing in one of the most beautiful areas of the bay. As you ply your paddle through the calm, protected water around Yukon Island, you'll see numerous sea otters and bald eagles, as well as seals, puffins, cormorants, and the occasional whale.

For those on a tight timeline, the Elephant Rock ¾-Day Trip offers an abridged version of the full-day fun. Paddlers will still experience much of the stellar scenery and wildlife of Yukon Island (and they'll enjoy the same hearty picnic lunch).

Details: No experience necessary. Minimum age requirement 6 years (some exceptions).

Meet the locals
Clem Tillion "When we were first married, the last steamer went out in October and didn't come back until April! There were no doctors, dentists, or electricity. I walked 300 miles to get to Homer, before the Sterling Highway was built."
