Portage Glacier Cruise Tour

Take an unforgettable glacier cruise right up to the face of a glacier, just 50 miles south of Anchorage. Spending an hour on the comfortable MV Ptarmigan, with narration from the US Forest Service, you’ll navigate around bobbing glaciers and motor to within 300 feet of the mammoth wall of ice called Portage Glacier (one of Alaska’s most popular attractions). Listen for the unmistakable rumbling of a calving glacier, waiting for the moment when a huge block of ice crashes into the sea.

Departing from Anchorage, you’ll take a deluxe motor coach down around Turnagain Arm, keeping an eye out for Beluga whales, then continue along one of America’s most scenic roads, the Seward Highway. Stop at the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center and browse the exhibits on glaciology. Then board the MV Ptarmigan, an 80-foot, 200-passenger heated ship. After your cruise, which lasts approximately 1 hour, you’ll return to the motor coach and on your way back to Anchorage stop at Alyeska Ski Resort for lunch on your own and an optional tram ride up Mt. Alyeska for stunning views.

Approximately 7 hours. Head out on the scenic Seward Highway to Portage Glacier. Stop at the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center to see the glaciology exhibits. Then board the mv Ptarmigan for an unforgettable 1-hour cruise across iceberg-dotted Portage Lake. On the way back to Anchorage, stop at the Alyeska Ski Resort for a 1-hour lunch on your own and an optional tram ride to the top of Mt. Alyeska.

City Tour + Portage Glacier Cruise Tour

If you have all day, add on a narrated motor coach tour of Anchorage. Alaska’s largest city is full of interesting sites, great scenery, and history, and this tour is a great way to get your bearings and decide what places to re-visit. Drive past the Log Cabin Visitor Center, Alaska Railroad Depot, and Museum of Art & History. Get a peek at Resolution Park and the Captain Cook Monument as well as Ship Creek Viewpoint, which overlooks Cook Inlet. The stop at the 25-acre Alaska Native Heritage Center and tour this unique museum devoted to the unique cultures and traditions that make up this great state.

Portage Glacier Cruise only

Have your own transportation? Cruise the placid Portage Lake, about an hour south of Anchorage, to Portage Glacier. It is truly worth the drive! The cruise takes only one hour, but it could be the most impressive 60 minutes of your life. Watch for huge chunks of ice to break away and crash in to the lake as the MV Ptarmigan weaves through iceberg-dotted waters. This is the best glacier cruise in Alaska for the money.

Details:  No experience necessary. No minimum age requirement, but small children may get restless on the longer tours.
