Located
just 40 miles from Anchorage
in the resort town of Girdwood,
The Hotel
Alyeska pairs
world-class accommodations with
Alaskan wilderness. This AAA-rated
4-diamond hotel (the only one
in the state) sits tucked amid
the Chugach Mountains on Alaska's
south-central coast, with a backdrop
of glaciers, bald eagles, and
towering spruce trees.
Outside the hotel, the resort staff
has done a wonderful job with the hotel's
mountainside landscaping, including
a small pond and plenty of flowers.
It's great place for a short walk,
or to start your hike on Winner Creek
trail, which is just beyond the tram
building.
Inside, you'll find rooms decorated
with simple elegance. Burgundy and
hunter green colors combine with black-and-white
nature photography and cherry wood
accents. The hotel's lobby and common
areas are quite grand by Alaska standards.
There's even a stuffed polar bear.
The Junior
Suites are
non-traditional, in that they do not
have separate living and sleeping areas,
but are spacious at 550-plus square
feet. These oversized rooms are found
in the hotel's tower under the Royal
Suite and take advantage of the rounded
windows for panoramic views. A recent
upgrade added new bedding, leather
couches, robes, and more. The Prince
Paradise beds are six layers of luxury,
with a down mattress top and feather
pillows.
The
1,275-square-foot Royal
Suite is The Hotel Alyeska's
premier room, featuring a two-level
parlor with panoramic views (via
floor-to-ceiling windows) of
the Turnagain Arm, mountains,
and glaciers. The master bedroom
features a marble bathroom with
oversize tub and separate shower.
Fresh flowers, original artwork,
and cherry wood accent the room.
The best part about The Hotel Alyeska-at
least for a local-is its incredible
fitness center. When the hotel was
initially built, some in Girdwood grimaced
at the intrusion. Those same folks
now smile while sitting in the huge
saltwater hot tub. It's a wonderful
place to relax after, say, dog mushing
on a glacier. Bay windows let you soak
up a view of the pond and north face
of Mt. Alyeska as well. The 16-person
hot tub sits at the end of a heated
25x45-foot lap pool, with a vaulted
wood-beam ceiling.
