Head
up the Twenty Mile River in a high-powered
jet boat with Coast Guard-certified
boat operator Mark Ryan and Alyeska
Adventure. According to Mark, this
trip boasts "the world's highest jet
boating TPM ratio (Thrills Per Minute)."
As you cruise up from the mouth of
Twenty Mile, Mark or one of his guides
will describe the history and natural
history of the area, pointing out old
trapper's cabins and explaining what
these rugged souls were up against.
They'll point out eagle's nests and
beaver dams, on the lookout for wildlife.
The river has deep channels with green
banks and the occasional bear or moose.
After heading upriver about 9 miles,
you'll turn and cruise to the confluence
with Glacier River, a braided, gravelly
waterway. It's wider, with expansive
views and opportunities to stretch
your legs outside the boat-have a look
around for animal tracks, go fishing,
or have a picnic. Mark's a great cook,
and he may treat you to a riverside
salmon barbecue.
If the group is up for a wild ride,
Glacier River is also where the "adventure
driving" happens. There are
logs and stumps to dodge, and the river's
always changing. Hang on as your guide
maneuvers through quick turns, 180s,
and other jet-boat acrobatics-you'll
feel like you're on a roller coaster.
The safari will continue all the
way to the Carmen Lake, water levels
permitting. Carmen Lake is a true alpine
gem, with steely blue waters and abundant
glaciers.
