Renting a Car
- Pros: It's cheaper
than renting a RV. The smaller size
makes for better gas mileage and
a speedier trip. You'll find more
one-way options, too.
- Cons: Having to
find a place to sleep and restaurants
every night can add pressure to the
trip and become expensive. There's
no on-demand restroom. Less space
is available for belongings or supplies,
such as food and gear.
Driving an RV
Driving an RV is easier than many
newbies think and require no special
license for nearly all models. Automatic
transmission, power brakes, and power
steering are standard equipment in
today's vehicles. With proper attention
to the difference in vehicle size,
height and weight, experienced car
drivers will find it easy to drive
an RV.
Operating an RV
There is a lot to learn about operating
all the systems on a rental RV-including
how to use the appliances, how to hook
up the rig at a campsite, how to dump
wastes, how to fold out beds, how to
run the generator, how to make sure
the toilet doesn't smell, and how to
deal safely with propane. Many modern
RV's are pretty user-friendly, however,
and just the push of a button will
indicate what needs attention. Also,
most rental companies will give you
a thorough orientation before you drive
it off the lot.
Size
Class C motorhomes are popular models
when it comes to renting a RV, usually
available in 22'-29' sizes. In addition
to beds and seating, a fully self-contained
RV will have a bathroom with toilet
and shower, stove, refrigerator, kitchen
sink, hot-water heater, and furnace.
Consider the size of your party when
choosing your RV. 20'-21' RVs comfortably
accommodate 2 adults and 2 children.
22'-24' RVs are appropriate for 4 adults
and 2 children. For a party of 5 or
6 adults consider a RV ranging from
28'-30'.
Prices
Rental prices tend to increase during
peak season and decrease during the
early and late part of the season.
Discounts are most common during off,
early, or late season and on specified
one-way trips that relocate RVs for
the company. Most companies charge
for damages so before you leave the
lot be sure to check the body, windshields,
and inside conditions of the RV-don't
get stuck paying more than you should.
Policies
Deposits are generally required for
RV rentals and many companies have
strict cancellation penalties. It is
important to know what's included and
what's extra in your rental agreement.
Companies differ on whether they charge
extra for mileage, insurance, dumping,
cleaning, and stock items for your
RV (dishware, towels, bedding etc.).
