The legacy and legend of Alaska's
gold rush history comes to life at Gold
Dredge No. 8, near Fairbanks.
Gray Line of Alaska is proud to own
and maintain the only gold dredge in
Alaska still open to the public. This "workhorse
of the riverbed" represents such
a valuable landmark to the historical
material archives of Alaska that it
has been placed on the register of
National Historic Sites. Gold Dredge
No. 8 is an enduring monument to the
pioneers who risked all, coming to
Alaska in search of their fortune.
Between 1928 and 1959, hundreds of
thousands of ounces of gold passed
through the five-deck dredge, which
functioned as a gigantic mechanical
gold pan. Gold Dredge No. 8 is actually
three museums, including the original
miners' bunkhouse, bath house, and
office. In addition to mining equipment
and tailings, check out mammoth tusks
and other prehistoric bones dug up
by the dredge.
After your guided tour through the
dredge, try your hand at panning for
gold-keep your findings as a memento
of your visit. Enjoy a hearty miner's
lunch of stew and biscuits.
