Fairbanks: Should I Go?
The gateway to Alaska’s Interior and Arctic regions, Fairbanks is a great base for exploring northern Alaska, and its Gold Rush heritage offers a taste of frontier living. You’ll find:
- Midnight Sun / Northern Lights: Enjoy endless daylight hours in summer and an all-natural light show in winter.
- Arctic tours: Take road or air excursions to Arctic destinations.
- Unique excursions: Experience gold mine tours and paddlewheel riverboats.
Transportation: How Do I Get There?
Most travelers visit Fairbanks by train, extending a trip through Denali. You can:
- Fly. There are daily commercial flights from Anchorage and Seattle.
- Take the train. It’s 12 hours from Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad; you can also layover in Denali, four hours away.
- Rent a Car: From Denali, it’s two hours by rental car.
