Seeing bears in the wild is one of Alaska’s most thrilling experiences. And it couldn’t be easier, even from the middle of Anchorage. Just hop aboard one of Regal Air’s planes, and after a short, scenic flight you can be watching enormous brown bears swat salmon from Alaska’s rushing waters.
Regal Air has been flying up here since 1982, and their pilots know the backcountry extremely well. Flying with them, you’ll have your pick of a couple amazing bear-viewing destinations: Silver Salmon Creek in Lake Clark National Park, or Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park. While both spots offer the bear-viewing of your dreams, the experiences are a little different.
Silver Salmon Creek/Lake Clark National Park is perfect for those who would like a more guided trip. After a one-hour scenic flight from Anchorage along the Cook Inlet, you’ll land right on a beach and board a four-wheeler to Homestead Lodge. Then, with your naturalist guide, you’ll trek out into the park, where salmon attract bears all summer long. After watching these gorgeous creatures in their natural habitat, you’ll return to the lodge for a hearty lunch.
- Brooks Falls/Katmai National Park offers a full day of adventure, for those looking for a more self-guided trip. Regal Air will take you on a two-hour, glacier-filled flight from Anchorage, with your pilot narrating highlights along the way. The pilot becomes your guide when you land, and you’ll have the chance to see bears performing their classic swipe at salmon as they leap up Brooks Falls. There’s no set schedule here: your pilot will set up a picnic-style lunch for whenever you’d like it.
But bear-viewing isn’t your only option with Regal Air. Go with them on fightseeing trips to Mt. McKinley and Denali National Park, the Knik and Blackstone glaciers, or Mt. Spurr. Or, if you’d like to fish on a remote river, Regal Air knows all the hot spots, and can take you there on guided or unguided fishing trips.
