Bear-viewing is the highlight of any vacation here. Go with Alaska Charters and Adventures and watching these magnificent creatures is a short boat ride away. On their tours, you can spend a full four hours watching black and/or brown bears fish, eat and play in the wild. Each trip is led by a certified naturalist, and generally with 6 or fewer passengers, it’s guaranteed to be highly personalized.

You’ll set off from Wrangell on a covered, heated, high-speed jet boat for an exciting ride. Big windows offer premium visibility: look for eagles nests, waterfowl, bears, seals, and whales as you travel through protected waters. And since it’s a small group, making stops and detours is easy. Want to stop off and explore native Alaskan culture? Not a problem. Interested in looking for wildlife? Just ask your naturalist guide.

Your destination is Anan Wildlife Observatory in the Tongass National Forest, 35 miles southeast of Wrangell, and an exclusive bear-viewing area accessible only by those with special permits. It’s an easy 1/2-mile walk on a trail to an observation deck and blind overlooking rushing waters teeming with one of Southeast Alaska’s largest natural pink salmon runs. From there you’ll spy on black and/or brown bears in their natural habitat, fishing for salmon and romping in the grass.

Here’s where the small group size is truly an advantage over large tour groups, since you’ll get to spend more time with the bears than most other operators. In fact, you’ll have a full four hours to watch these gorgeous animals. And of course, you’ll also get personalized information from your naturalist—everything you want to know about bears, just ask.

And bear-viewing is just the beginning of what Alaska Charters and Adventures offers. You’ll also find expert-led fishing trips for salmon, halibut, lingcod, and snapper in the protected waters of the Inside Passage. There are photography excursions, trips to LeConte Glacier and up the Stikine River for more wildlife viewing, whale watching, hunting, cabin and fishing dropoffs, or any kind of customizable trip you can dream up.
